Monday Moments with President Bergman: February 18, 2019

Gustavus President Rebecca M. Bergman shares her thoughts with College employees each week.

President Rebecca M. Bergman

During the past week, I have had opportunities to connect with students and hear about their varied January Interim experiences. From study away trips across the world, to internship opportunities at companies all over the United States, to on-campus classes about agricultural sustainability or studying jazz as poetry, their enthusiasm for learning inspires me every day, and their dreams and ambitions give me confidence that our future is in good hands.

Gustavus is blessed with bright and motivated students who are surrounded by a caring and committed faculty as well a dedicated staff. The learning environment here is second to none and it is a privilege to be a part of such a devoted community of educators.

During the spring semester (including this week with Senior Day today and continuing with Spring Scholarship Day on Saturday), we will be welcoming hundreds of prospective students (and their families) who are trying to determine where they will spend their all-important college years. It is up to us, collectively, to persuade these prospective students that Gustavus can be their “home.”

We have so much to be proud of at Gustavus. A cutting-edge science building that will allow students access to state-of-the-art technology in classrooms designed for interdisciplinary learning, a Center for Career Development that is designed to help students discern their calling and network with successful alumni, and a new curriculum on the horizon that is designed to equip students with the skills necessary to face the great challenges of our time. On top of that, we have a special community that is committed to the College’s 156-year mission of preparing young people for lives of leadership and service.

Gusties shine here on the hill and all over the world. Let’s share that bright light with the many visitors we will welcome over the next three months as they make their college decision. As you go about your work, commit to a spirit of welcoming and helpfulness as we set the stage for another eager and talented group of Gusties this fall. All of us can help recruit the Class of 2023.

Until next week, keep up the good work, Gusties!

With respect,

Becky
