President Rebecca M. Bergman

At the opening convocation of this school year we talked about the concept of valuing community and delivering excellence, and since that time I have had conversations with many of you about what that means. Those conversations have motivated me to start a weekly communication to all employees about the ways I see Gusties carrying out our collective work. In this short message each Monday morning, I hope to provoke, motivate, and inspire discussion about how together we can provide a dynamic and distinctive Gustavus education that prepares students for the challenging world in which we live. I hope that each of us can take a moment to reflect and then look ahead to how we will best serve our students in the coming week.

I am inspired daily by the many ways our Gustavus community acts on the great challenges of our time. Recent examples include addressing the science and ethics of reproductive technology at the Nobel Conference, supporting the local United Way campaign, and sending student crews to help build a Habitat house in Mountain Iron, Minnesota over fall break. It is such a privilege to work with the gifted and committed members of this special place on the hill.

This week, all campus employees will receive a lapel pin featuring a logo celebrating Valuing Community and Delivering Excellence. It is my hope that you will wear it proudly and help us all strive to make Gustavus an extraordinary place to work, live, and learn. When we each aspire to excellence in everything we do, we benefit the entire community. By valuing and supporting each other, we create a community that can accomplish amazing goals. Every day, in every way, I am committed to this standard of excellence. How about you?

Until next week, keep up the good work, Gusties!

With respect,

Becky
