Monday Moments with President Bergman: March 12, 2018

Gustavus President Rebecca M. Bergman shares her thoughts with College employees each week.

President Rebecca M. Bergman

What is special about 3s and 8s this year? You guessed it — all alumni who graduated in years ending in a 3 or an 8 will celebrate their major reunions on campus June 8-10. It will be a time for reconnection with friends and faculty, retelling of stories, and tons of fun. This is one example of the ways we are encouraging our alumni to get engaged with each other and with Gustavus.

With over 27,000 alumni and friends of the College living all over the world, we are excited about the possibilities embedded in Gustavus Acts Strategy 3.5: Increase the engagement and giving of alumni and friends. We are blessed to have alumni and friends who care deeply about Gustavus and who are investing their time and resources to advance our mission and support today’s students.

Our alumni and parent engagement staff work throughout the year to provide opportunities for our alumni to gather, connect, and give back to their alma mater. In fact, Rally Days began March 10 and run through March 24. During this time we encourage alumni to attend a strategic planning event, mentor a Gustavus student, donate to the Gustavus Fund, or volunteer through admission or career development. Alumni engagement is not just about donations, but all the ways in which our alumni share their time and talents with the Gustavus community.

How can you help? Whenever you see alumni on our campus, take a minute to welcome them and ask about their experiences as a student and their life beyond Gustavus. You will likely prompt a story about a relationship or an event that is both meaningful and memorable. When you are away from campus, wear your Gustie gear. Chances are high that a Gustie alum will greet you and ask about what’s happening on the hill. Share the Gustie spirit and encourage alumni to get involved with today’s students.

Until next week, keep up the good work, Gusties!

With respect,

Becky
