Monday Moments with President Bergman: December 17, 2018

Gustavus President Rebecca M. Bergman shares her thoughts with College employees each week.

President Rebecca M. Bergman

Yesterday my children came home to help decorate our Christmas tree, a Bergman family tradition that was even richer this year with the presence of our first-born granddaughter. We laughed and reminisced as the ornaments filled the tree, each one carrying its own story. There was no talk of work or worries, just a family spending time together in the warmth of the holiday season.

Last night, after a busy week at the end of a busy fall semester, after the children had returned to their homes, I took a moment to reflect. For me, this special season is one of tradition and gratitude, of looking back on the year and planning ahead for the days to come.

We have accomplished much this year at Gustavus, growing our student body in academic strength and rich diversity, diligently crafting a new curriculum, and working together to make the College both financially and environmentally sustainable. As we look ahead, 2019 offers us the chance to reach ever-greater heights as an institution dedicated to equipping students to lead purposeful lives and to act on the great challenges of our time.

I am truly grateful for your dedication and commitment to moving Gustavus forward. As we join in community to celebrate our annual holiday gatherings this week, I hope you find time to share your gratitude with others who shape and support your work. This season, as you celebrate your own traditions with family and friends, take some time to recharge and reflect — and look ahead knowing that an even brighter future is on the horizon.

Until we meet again in the New Year, have a safe and happy break, Gusties!

Happy Holidays,

Becky
