This weekend I stared at the forecast calling for more snow and I thought, “Whatever happened to spring?”
I made a cup of tea and looked at my calendar. Our students are back from break, many of them returning from service trips for Habitat for Humanity and other organizations. We have candidates on campus for our next Provost and Dean of the College. The Moe Lecture in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies takes place on Wednesday night. Next week, Dr. Walter Williams will be on campus as the Lindau Resident in Conservative Thought and our Board of Trustees will gather for the spring business meeting.
Although spring has not quite arrived, growth and progress are all around us. Gustavus, like a tulip getting ready to push through the soil, is blossoming anew with the promise of our strategic plan. The bulb, planted in the soil of excellence, community, justice, service, and faith, has been nurtured through your hard work as employees and fertilized by the generosity of our donors.
It doesn’t matter that there’s snow on the ground today. It’s spring at Gustavus. Soon, the crabapple trees will bloom on the hill. Until then, let us share the joy and energy of the season with our students and one another.
Until next week, keep up the good work, Gusties!
With respect,
Becky
