Monday Moments with President Bergman: March 19, 2018

Gustavus President Rebecca M. Bergman shares her thoughts with College employees each week.

President Rebecca M. Bergman

A new feature was recently added to the Gustavus skyline — a large crane towering over the Nobel Hall construction site. Complete with a Gustavus flag, the crane is a visible signal that we have a major project underway. The project will proceed in two phases, beginning with the construction of a new science wing to the south of Nobel Hall that creates connection to the Schaefer Fine Arts Center, followed by the complete renovation of the existing Nobel building.

In addition to the tremendous excitement I am feeling to see this highly anticipated construction project get underway, I believe it is symbolic of our commitment to the implementation of the Gustavus Acts Strategic Plan. We are a people of action, dedicated to supporting our mission, our community, and a high standard of excellence in everything we do. Over the last two months, I have focused the Monday Moments messages on the seven high priority strategies of Gustavus Acts. In summary, we are focused on:

  • Giving our students:
    • Access and affordability
    • An exceptional curricular and co-curricular experience
    • Preparation for a successful life beyond graduation
  • Giving both our students and employees:
    • A welcoming community that supports diversity, equity, and inclusion
    • Facilities that support our mission
  • Giving our employees:
    • A place to work that respects the dignity of each individual, expects and rewards excellence, and provides opportunities for professional development
  • Giving our alumni and friends:
    • Programs and activities that encourage engagement and giving for all Gusties

These seven priority areas combine in synergistic ways to build momentum and take Gustavus to new heights. Action is the key to forward progress. You cannot get to a new place if you do not put one foot in front of the other. This week, when you look up at that glorious crane, may it remind you of the many ways we are building Gustavus into an even more exceptional place to live and work.

Until next week, keep up the good work, Gusties!

With respect,

Becky
