Good morning, Gusties. Fall Break is here, and I hope that all of youstudents and employeesare finding time to relax after pushing hard for the first half of the semester. The “on-the-go” pace of college life can be stressful and exhausting, which is why taking time for rest and reflection is important for our wellbeing. For me, that means unplugging from technology and getting out into nature. I love being outdoors any time of year, but I find that mother nature puts on a show in the fall that is unmatched in the other seasons. The air has turned a little crisper, the trees are displaying an array of beautiful colors, the birds are particularly noisy, and the smells of fall are unmistakable. A walk in the woods is my number one choice for “taking a break,” and I savor those opportunities to closely observe the beauty and diversity of the world around me.

What is your favorite way to take a break from the hectic pace and stresses that seem to be part of our everyday lives? There are, of course, an abundance of choices that can help us feel refreshed and renewed. One of the keys is to slow down from the frenzied pace that we tend to impose on ourselves. In other words, take the time to truly enjoy whatever activity you choose, force yourself to stop multitasking, and be mindful of the moment. A little more leisurely pace can bring an appreciation for life and genuine feelings of happiness.

You might enjoy a special activity with your familyorganizing a movie night, going for a bike ride, playing a board game, or curling up around the fireplace and telling stories. You might try a new, creative recipe and enjoy a home-cooked meal with friends. You might immerse yourself in a book that you have been looking forward to reading. You might enjoy getting out to see a play or listen to live music. You might take a road trip to a place or an event that has been on your bucket list.

Whatever it is that gives you joy, enjoy your time with family and friends in these precious days of Fall Break.

Yours in community,

President Bergman
